Historic Sites

The Godley Head gun emplacements stand as a powerful reminder of Christchurch's coastal defence history. Built during World War II to protect the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour, these concrete fortifications remain among the area's most iconic landmarks. Today, vibrant murals by local artist Wongi Wilson bring new life to the site, blending military heritage with contemporary creativity and making the gun emplacements a fascinating highlight of the Godley Head Loop Track.

Scott's Cabin

Scott's Cabin has a remarkable history, having travelled from England to New Zealand, then to Antarctica, before eventually finding its home at Godley Head. Set against sweeping coastal views, it offers a glimpse into the heroic age of exploration and the world of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. A fascinating stop along the track, the cabin connects visitors to both Christchurch's Antarctic heritage and the stories of Antarctica's icy frontier.

Wildlife

From soaring seabirds to playful lambs, wildlife is an ever-present part of the Godley Head experience. Keep an eye out for spotted shags, red-billed gulls, and the endangered white-flippered penguin along the coastline, while dolphins and New Zealand fur seals may occasionally be seen offshore. Across the hillsides, grazing sheep, skylarks, and swallows add to the charm of this unique coastal landscape.
